Based on the information in paragraphs 9-12, how do you think receptors in the nose and on the tongue might have helped our ancient ancestors survive? Use evidence from the text to support your answer. Commonlit, article: a matter of taste

Answers

Answer:The tongue, the nose, and the brain all work together to notice flavors.

Explanation:

It’s an experiment that proves the importance of the nose in the sense we call “taste.” Hold your nose closed and put a jelly bean or some other fruit-flavored candy in your mouth. Chew the candy. You’ll taste sweetness and maybe a little sourness but not much else. Then open your nose. Suddenly, you’ll get the full force of the fruit flavor. Chewing releases molecules, which are groups of atoms stuck together, in the candy. In the mouth, these molecules trigger basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Odor molecules also float from the back of the mouth up into the nose.

Jack. I fear there can be no possible doubt about the matter. This afternoon during my temporary absence in London on an important question of romance, he obtained admission to my house by means of the false pretense of being my brother. Under an assumed name he … stayed to tea, and devoured every single muffin. And what makes his conduct all the more heartless is, that he was perfectly well aware from the first that I have no brother, that I never had a brother, and that I don’t intend to have a brother, not even of any kind. I distinctly told him so myself yesterday afternoon.

The Necessity of Hybrids".

What do you get if you cross two different species? Depending upon the species, you might end up with a grolar bear, a wolfdog, or a Savannah cat, among many others. What do these animals have in common? They're hybrids. Sometimes hybrids happen naturally in the wild, but usually, hybrids are the result of humans selectively breeding animals.

Grolar bears and pizzlies are the result of crossing polar bears and grizzly bears. These hybrids were first seen in zoos, as the bears' natural habitats did not normally overlap. Recently, these hybrids have started appearing in the wild. Due to climate change, the bears' once-separate habitats are beginning to overlap. Bigger and more aggressive than their parents, grolar bears and pizzlies could pose a risk to natural habitats and humans.

Wolfdogs are, as their name suggests, the result of crossing a wolf with a domestic dog. Bred for the pet trade, these hybrids do not often happen in the wild. Wolfdogs do not make good pets, however, as they can be destructive and aggressive. Many states have outlawed keeping wolfdogs because they can pose a danger to people.

Savannah cats are another example of human-made hybrids that were developed to be pets. Savannahs are the result of crossing a small wildcat called a serval with a domestic housecat. They look like miniature versions of the wildcat, which is why many people like keeping them as pets. Like the wolfdog, however, Savannahs do not make ideal house pets. They can be destructive, and usually, they keep the wild nature of the serval.

There are many more examples of human-made hybrid animals. Some hybrids, such as the mule, have been helpful to humans. Unfortunately, others, like the wolfdog or Savannah cat, should not have been made in the first place.

According to the text, why are bear hybrids being seen in the wild?

Due to climate change, the bears' once-separate habitats are beginning to overlap.

Grolar bears and pizzlies are the result of crossing polar bears and grizzly bears.

Grolar bears and pizzlies could pose a risk to natural habitats and humans.

These hybrids were first seen in zoos, as the bears' natural habitats did not normally overlap.

Answers

Answer:

Endangered polar bears are breeding with grizzly bears, creating hybrid “pizzly” bears, and it's being driven by climate change, scientists say.

As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being driven ever further south, where they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two species comes more mating, and therefore increased sightings of their hybrid offspring.

With features that could give them an edge in warming northern habitats, some scientists speculate that the pizzlies, or "grolars", could be here to stay.

Answer:

B

Explanation:

Grizzly bears are found today in Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and possibly southern Colorado, as well as in western Canada. Historically they ranged from Alaska to Mexico and from the Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River, but their numbers were vastly reduced by western expansion.

In a response of one well-developed paragraph, compare and contrast the structure of 'Will There Really be a "Morning?"' by Emily Dickinson and 'Ozymandias' by Percy Bysshe Shelley and the effect of each text's structure. Dickinson punctuation and lines in her poems to establish a rhythm. Each reader will naturally find themselves reading the poem in the same way. She uses The repeating question marks and exclamation points to convey the passion in her words. Shelley uses punctuation to help paint a picture in the reader's mind. For example, the ellipses after "Stand in the dessert" evoke a silence, as it would feel in a deserted, old place.

THE PARAGRAGH!!!

Everyone has heard the adage "Laughter is the best medicine." Researchers are finding that writing about one’s feelings can be effective medicine, too. People have been recording their feelings in diaries for centuries. Recent studies, though, suggest that such writing not only improves a person’s mood; it can also have a significant influence on their physical condition. Therefore, physicians should incorporate patient journaling as part of their treatment for any complaint or disease.

It is true that not all people benefit from diary-writing. Studies are still exploring how individual differences influence the health-related effectiveness of writing. It is also true that not all writing benefits a person's health. For example, it's not enough to simply write, "I feel bad" or "I hurt." To gain any health benefit, the writing must be expressive. In other words, a person must explore their feelings instead of only stating them. They must write sentences that begin along the lines of "I feel sad because..." This is the type of writing, often called journaling, that can improve one's health.

One way journaling improves health is by reducing stress and anxiety. Brain science has determined that each side of the human brain has different strengths. The left brain is rational and analytical. The right brain functions as a creative and emotional center. Journaling about stressful or anxious situations accesses the right brain. Doing so enables a person to clarify feelings and solve problems. Consistent journaling also helps the writer discover patterns of thought and behavior. According to Richard Petty, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University, "However you tag your thoughts—as trash or as worthy of protection—seems to make a difference in how you use those thoughts." Expressive writing can help not only identify but also change the way a person tags their thoughts. A 2011 study conducted in Spain, for example, found that writing helped teens get rid of negative thoughts. In the study, teens wrote down their negative thoughts about their bodies. This cleared the thoughts from their minds. Then they threw away what they wrote. As a result, the teens felt less stress and anxiety about their appearances.

Research suggests that journaling can also improve a person's physical well-being. It has proven to be particularly beneficial to people who have chronic diseases, such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease characterized by swelling in the joints. In one study, psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin asked patients to write expressively for twenty minutes a day for three consecutive days. In a medical check-up four months later, those patients had fewer and less severe symptoms. The control group, which had the same disease but did not write expressively, did not show such improvement.

In addition to reducing symptoms of existing diseases, expressive writing can also strengthen the body's ability to fight off disease. A person's immune system is responsible for fighting off viruses and other causes of illness. Doctors in New Zealand found that journaling strengthened immune function in patients with immune system disease. Another study linked journaling to a stronger response to a vaccine for a type of blood disease called Hepatitis B. The stronger response means the body will be more effective in fighting off the illness.

Journaling, therefore, can improve one's physical and emotional health. Further research is necessary to solidify how and why expressive writing has such an impact. Nevertheless, it is an option that all medical professionals should consider. Although journaling is not a replacement for traditional treatment methods such as therapy and medication, it is a supplemental tool to improve the effects of that treatment. It is not out of the question, then, to imagine a day when doctors might instruct a patient to "write two paragraphs and call me in the morning."
The Question

Read the sentence below, which states the claim of the argument.

Therefore, physicians should incorporate patient journaling as part of their treatment for any complaint or disease.

Which of the following is a reason, not evidence, the author gives to support the claim?

A
Research indicates that journaling can help people with rheumatoid arthritis.

B
Writing expressively can help people fight diseases and viruses, according to doctors.

C
Expressive writing can improve a person’s health, so doctors should recommend it.

D
A study showed that when teens wrote down and threw away negative thoughts, they felt better.

Read the excerpts from the two articles on sea otters.

Article A

Sea otters live in the chilly Northern Pacific Ocean and spend almost all their lives in the water. They sleep, hunt, groom, mate, and give birth in the ocean, where they float on their backs on the water's surface. Adult sea otters spend more than a third of their day grooming their fur. This isn't for vanity; it's for survival. Unlike most sea mammals, sea otters do not have an inner layer of fat to protect them from the cold water. These creatures rely on their dense fur to protect them from the low temperatures. Sea otters have one of the thickest furs in all of the animal kingdom. An adult sea otter's coat can contain up to 1 billion individual hairs! These hairs form a protective, waterproof layer, which traps air and provides insulation. It is crucial that a sea otter's fur is kept clean to maintain this insulating layer between the water and their skin.

Article B

In the 1800s, sea otters were hunted for their fur. The fur trade between North America and Europe was booming, and sea otter fur was a popular option because of its thickness. By the mid-20th century, sea otters had been hunted to near extinction. Only 1,000–2,000 sea otters were believed to be living in the wild in 1929. Many people thought the species would soon become extinct. However, due to conservation efforts during the second half of the 20th century, sea otter populations recovered. The strengthening of the numbers of sea otters in the wild is often considered to be one of the greatest successes in marine conservation.

How do the authors of the two articles address the same topic in these excerpts?

Article A highlights the quality of the sea otter's fur while Article B focuses on conservation efforts that have saved the sea otter in recent years.
Article A focuses on the characteristics of the sea otter's fur while Article B focuses on sea otter fur being one of the reasons the animal was hunted.
Article A includes historical facts about the significance of the sea otter's fur while Article B focuses on the different ways that the population has recovered.
Article A focuses on the sea otter's vanity over its fur while Article B focuses on human vanity to hunt and use sea otter fur for coats and clothing.
