In Maiden Lane, now Park Street, in Southwark, on the south bank of the Thames, it was constructed in 1599. The Shakespeare's Globe was a doughnut-shaped outdoor amphitheater. Up to 3,000 spectators may fit in the seats. The stage and seating were covered by shelters, while the middle area was open to the sky. Plays were presented during the day rather than at night as they are today since there was no other light source than the sun. Since the Globe was constructed using highly flammable materials like wood and plaster, no candles were used to provide lighting since they were prone to being burned. When the Puritans ordered the closing of all London theaters in 1642, they also ordered the closure of the Globe.
The structure itself was demolished between 1644 and 1645 to create room for tenement construction.
