Do you think there was any way the native populations could have expelled Europeans from the Americas?

Answers

No, I don't think so. When Europeans first arrived in America, they were already using metals and gunpowder, while the native population of America was still using stone tools and had just started experimenting with bronze. Moreover, Europeans bought many pathogens with them from which they themselves were immune, but the native population was not. The flu virus alone is said to have wiped most of the population. Europeans could not have been defeated because they had better technologies and resources.

Why were the stars so important to ancient civilizations?

History of Astronomy Research/Questions

Answers

Any civilizations with advanced enough astronomy gained practical advantages, too. A calendar, based on the regular patterns of the Sun, the Moon, and the stars, is essential if you want to be successful at agriculture in temperate climates. Astronomy gives you navigation, too -- not only at sea (the Polynesians being the most amazing example), but being able to tell which way is north at night may well be an advantage if you wanted to hunt or wage a battle at night.

Read the passage from a speech given by the Athenian leader Pericles.

Our constitution does not copy the laws of neighboring states; we are rather a pattern to be imitated than imitators ourselves. Its administration favors the many instead of the few; this is why it is called democracy. If we look to the laws, they afford equal justice to all in their private differences. . . . [C]lass considerations [are not] allowed to interfere with merit; nor again does poverty bar the way, if a man is able to serve the state, he is not hindered by the obscurity of his condition.

Pericles claimed that the Athenian government, unlike other Greek city-states,

1.favored its wealthy citizens.
2.kept poor people from serving the state.
3.imitated the laws of its neighbors.
4.treated all its people fairly regardless of class.

What economic problems were faced by the north and south during
the civil war?

Answers

The South faced much more hardship economically during the war (because their agricultural economy based on slave labor made mobilization of resources more difficult while the North's economic and industrial capacity soared during the war as it continued its rapid industrialization). In the South, the biggest problems were lack of labor, poverty and poor relief, especially in times of acute food shortages. Also, their money had no base and was ultimately worthless, making buying and selling goods extremely difficult. They couldn't get aid from foreign nations due to their lack of capital and resources to spare (and when cotton and other cash crop fields were destroyed and lost money, it was a nail in the coffin). The North, on the other hand, had a solid economy with money well-backed by gold and silver. Their industrialization also meant that the main problem faced, which they could recover from and work through, was labor shortages (from all men going to fight).

During the Civil War, the South had a lot more economic problems and problems in general, but the North had some too. The North and South were drastically different during this time and had different viewpoints on a lot of things. The South wanted to fight to keep slavery, so that was the top reason why the Civil War happened.

One of the main reasons why the South was having more struggles, along with economic struggles, was because they were focused on agriculture. The North was already focused on industrial work, which was making it easy for them to make guns, ammo, and other needed supplies for war. Since the South was so focused on agriculture, they did not have a lot of the same supplies the North had and would often rely on Great Britain or other countries to send them supplies overseas. A lot of the battles of the Civil War were fought in the South, which made it so many of their crops and land were destroyed, which was their prime source of income. They did not have the funds to keep going, they did not have enough troops to keep going, and their central government was weak and was not helping the war cause.

The North also met their fair share of struggles, but was much better off than the South was. Due to how industrialized the North was, this made it hard to find many of the workers needed to man these factories. Along with this, many of the Northern people were very against going to war and many were disinterested in even participating in it whatsoever, which caused draft riots and overall riots on the basis of war.

Which law created quotas that made it harder for southern and eastern Europeans to immigrate to the United States and easier for northern Europeans?
the Chinese Exclusion Act
the Immigration Act of 1917
the Emergency Quota Act
the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act

Answers

The Immigration Act of 1917 created quotas that made it harder for southern and eastern Europeans to immigrate to the United States and easier for northern Europeans. Thus, option B is correct.

What is the the Immigration Act of 1917?

The Immigration Act of 1917, also known as the Literacy Act and less frequently as the Asiatic Barred Zone Act, was a United States law that sought to limit immigration by requiring immigrants to pass literacy tests, establishing new categories of people who were ineligible to enter the country, and prohibiting immigration from the Asia-Pacific region.

It was the broadest immigration law the United States had ever passed and it marked a turn towards nativism after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The Immigration legislation of 1924 replaced the 1917 legislation as the law governing immigration until it was updated by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.

Find the directional derivative of at the point (-2, -3) in the direction .

The gradient of f is :∇f=⟨?,? ⟩

∇f(−2,−3)=⟨?,? ⟩

The directional derivative is:?

Answers

Explanation:

Given: [tex]f(x, y) = \sin(x + 2y)[/tex] P(-2, -3)

The unit vector in the direction of [tex]\theta = 3\pi/4[/tex] is given by

[tex]\vec{\textbf{u}} = \left(-\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right)\hat{\textbf{i}} + \left(\dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right)\hat{\textbf{j}}[/tex]

The gradient of f(x, y) [tex]\nabla{f(x, y)}[/tex] is defined as

[tex]\nabla{f(x, y)} = \dfrac{\partial{f}}{\partial{x}}\hat{\textbf{i}} + \dfrac{\partial{f}}{\partial{y}}\hat{\textbf{j}}[/tex]

[tex]= \cos(x + 2y)\hat{\textbf{i}} + 2\cos(x+ 2y)\hat{\textbf{j}}[/tex]

so the gradient of f(x, y) at (-2,-3) is

[tex]\nabla{f(-2, -3)} = \cos(-8)\hat{\textbf{i}} + 2\cos(-8)\hat{\textbf{j}}[/tex]

Therefore, the directional derivative [tex]D_uf(x, y)[/tex] is

[tex]D_uf(x, y) = \nabla{f(x, y)}\cdot \vec{\textbf{u}}[/tex]

[tex]\:\:\:\:\:\:\:=\cos(-8)\left(-\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right) + 2\cos(-8)\left(\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right)[/tex]

[tex]\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:=\cos(-8)\left(\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\right) = -0.103[/tex]
