The Sherburne formation refers to sequence of sedimentary rocks that was deposited in the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Montana and Wyoming which is thought to have been deposited in a shallow marine environment with the shoreline fluctuating over time.

As the Sherburne was being deposited, the distance to/from the shore of the sea was changing in the area. At the bottom of the formation, the sediment is composed of finer-grained rocks  such as shale and mudstone which indicate a more offshore environment.

But as you move up the formation, the sediment becomes coarser with the sandstone and conglomerate becoming more prevalent which suggests that the shoreline was moving closer and the area was becoming shallower.
