Tyler case: Tyler is in his 2nd year of kindergarten. He's autistic and has a severe language disorder but this has been a very successful school year for him. Tyler's teacher Whitney Meed [assumed spelling] describes his progress and one of the augmentative or alternative communication techniques that has brought about his success. >> Last year when I got him he came from the center where he had been in, you know, pre-services. He was nonverbal, very typical, sitting in the corner, very content to play by himself, no interaction. Then last year we had him in the inclusion classroom and we started using what's called PECS with him. It's a picture exchange communication system where you teach a child to associate a picture with an item and if I give you that picture you're going give me that item. And from that you're teaching to pair verbalizations. I want popcorn, whatever you choose to use and you want to pick something that's very inviting that you know that they want, and we started at that. We started with chocolate milk and popcorn and we ate bag upon bag of popcorn. But he figured it out and so then you move to a notebook where you put all the picture symbols and you teach them to manipulate it and to use speech once they've lined it up. It's kind of a queuing system. And now he is very verbal. He interacts with his peers. He loves his classmates. He's really starting to come out of his shell and really pick up a lot of skills. >> Here Tyler's making a snack with Whitney Meed and a classmate. >> Tyler, do you want a turn? >> Yeah! [ Inaudible Remark ] >> I want 4 -- >> 4 pretzel -- >> Pretzel please. >> Good job. [ Inaudible Remark ] Good, okay, all done pretzel. [ Inaudible Remark ] >> Cereal >> Fruit Loops. [ Inaudible Remarks ] >> Good girl! >> In fact, the speech and language pathologist for Tyler's school encourages all teachers to use visual strategies. This includes sign language for speech or language delayed children along with other basic approaches. >> Slow down, to use less words, to give the child time to respond, never to call attention to the problem, never ever to make fun of them or allow other children to make fun of them, that's the first thing we do. Then we start looking for

How would you explain these differences in terms of Hofstede's cultural dimensions
and communication styles?
The differences in cultural dimensions and styles in the case shown above are explained by Hofstede through the distance of power.
We can arrive at this answer because:
Hofstede was a psychologist who defined differences between cultures and communication styles based on five different dimensions.Among these dimensions, we can mention the power distance between people. This power distance determines that individuals who are positioned on different rungs of a hierarchy communicate in different ways, in addition to having different customs from each other. As we can see in the case above, a power distance existed between Claude (employee) and Richard (boss). This distance of power causes Claude to refer to Richard in a very formal and respectful way, whereas Richard does not feel this need and refers to Claude very informally, without considering the hierarchy between them.

Marissa remains an incredibly shy person when she is around other people, especially when meeting them for the first time. She realizes that some people misperceive her shyness as being “stuck up,” “aloof,” and/or “arrogant”. Write at least two (2) examples of reading materials that can be used for each reading style:
scanning, skimming, speed reading, and intensive reading.

Answer:
[tex] \: \\ [/tex]
Skimming and scanning are two very different strategies for speed reading. They are each used for different purposes, and they are not meant to be used all the time. They are at the fast end of the speed reading range, while studying is at the slow end. People who know how to skim and scan are flexible readers. They read according to their purpose and get the information they need quickly without wasting time. They do not read everything which is what increases their reading speed. Their skill lies in knowing what specific information to read and which method to use.Skimming :
Skimming is one of the tools you can use to read more in less time. Skimming refers to looking only for the general or main ideas, and works best with non-fiction (or factual) material. With skimming, your overall understanding is reduced because you don’t read everything. You read only what is important to your purpose. Skimming takes place while reading and allows you to look for details in addition to the main ideas.
Scanning :
Scanning is another useful tool for speeding up your reading. Unlike skimming, when scanning, you look only for a specific fact or piece of information without reading everything. You scan when you look for your favorite show listed in the cable guide, for your friend’s phone number in a telephone book, and for the sports scores in the newspaper. For scanning to be successful, you need to understand how your material is structured as well as comprehend what you read so you can locate the specific information you need. Scanning also allows you to find details and other information in a hurry
