Habitat destruction refers to the loss of natural habitat as a result of human activities. On land, this takes the form of deforestation—trees are cut down to clear the land for agricultural or commercial purposes. In water, habitat destruction occurs when aquatic habitats such as coral reefs are destroyed because of fishing, recreational, and industrial activities.

Coral reefs are one of the largest underwater ecosystems, but they are under the threat of destruction. Human activities such as underwater diving, harvesting, and fishing are bringing in a lot of money, but they are harmful to coral reefs. Humans have been fishing in the oceans for many years. Fishing brings in revenue for those living close to the sea. However, practices like blast fishing are destroying ocean habitats. While the large fish are captured by the fishermen after the blast, many small fish that are left behind do not survive the injuries they sustain during the blast.

Steps need to be taken to stop this irresponsible destruction of habitats. Human beings have become selfish. They are interested in furthering their commercial interests and pay no heed to the destruction they leave in their wake. We must learn to coexist peacefully with nature or else lose our natural resources and face the threat of extinction.

Preventing them from fishing will mean a loss of their livelihood. Blast fishing is a process that ensures quicker and larger yields of fish. It is an economically viable technique of fishing, posing no real threat to the ocean habitats.

While it is true that we must use our natural resources responsibly, it is unreasonable to demand that we stop all human activities involving natural habitats. Both the present and the future of mankind are driven by commerce. We must bear this in mind before taking any drastic measures.
