American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, author, and politician Frederick Douglass was also a writer. He became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York after escaping enslavement in Maryland. He was well-known for his oratory and cutting antislavery writings.
He claims in the essay that slave owners knew what would happen if their people got an education. Thus, some people's understanding may be mistaken for others' ignorance.Douglass describes in his essay how his mistress stopped providing him with education because her husband told her not to because he wanted him to continue the education he had begun. The mistress's husband understood that keeping servants in the dark ensured their master would always be in control of them. If slaves understood that there is a process known as abolition that will grant them freedom, they would not remain on the territory of their masters and, more importantly, they would not allow their masters to own them.
The slave depicted in this essay, who, after a lengthy discussion with his owner, earned his voluntary emancipation, also learned that there was hope for him to become a free man by reading various papers and books like The Columbian Orator. Douglass conveys his regret at being powerless to take action to set himself free. He occasionally desires that he had the same level of ignorance as his fellow slaves, who had grown accustomed to their situation and were unaware that there was anything that could set them free.
He writes, “Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more forever. It was heard in every sound, and seeing in everything. It was ever present to torment me with a sense of wretched condition”
According to Douglass, literacy is a highly empowering ability that would grant slaves their freedom. In his article, Douglass explains from the perspective of a former slave what it's like to be owned by another person and how important it is to know that doing so can lead to freedom.
