The Spanish king Philip II wanted the French threat removed, especially since the settlers were Protestants and for Philip, a Catholic, which made them intolerable.
When Menéndez returned to his camp at St. Augustine, the local Indians told him that they saw white men sailing on the south coast of St. Augustine.
