Using the excerpts from the Story of My Life by Helen Keller and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, compare and contrast the themes presented by the authors.
Answer: There are some similarities to the central idea in the passages. Both narrators want to learn. Both narrators faced hard times, but still managed to overcome their obstacles. Helen and Frederick learned even though it was a task that was very hard to accomplish. There are also some differences to the central idea in the passages. Helen Keller is blind and deaf and Frederick Douglass is a slave. Helen is being encouraged to learn while Frederick is being discouraged to learn to read. Frederick always wanted to learn to read and write while Helen had a brief time where she didn’t want to learn. Helen had one teacher who worked with her every day. Frederick had many teachers. He started learning from his mistress and when she stopped, Frederick went out and learned from anyone he could find who was willing to teach him. Helen learned by having the words traced in her hands. Frederick learned to read by starting with the sounds of the alphabet

The Haunted Forest
Once upon a time there was a family, made up of two young ones and their parents, traveling by road to road. One day the car broke down in the forest. The parents went out to get help, and so the children would not get bored, they left them with the radio on. It turned night time and the parents still did not return. Then suddenly they heard the disturbing news go on in the radio: A very dangerous killer had escaped from a prison near the forest. Hours passed and the children's parents did not come back. Suddenly, they began to hear something really loud. ¨Bang, Bang, Bang¨. They heard that which seemed to come from something hitting the top of the car. Then, the sound became louder and louder every time. ¨BANG, BANG, BANG¨. The terrified children could no longer resist. They opened the door and ran in a hurry. Only the eldest of the children dared to turn his head to see what caused the loud noise. He should have not done it though, there was a large and scary man on top of the car, who hit the top of the vehicle with something on his hands, they were the heads of his parents! The children began to run even faster and the large man began to run towards them. The children ran into the forest and so did the large man. After that day no one ever saw those children ever again, and who knows, they may appear mysteriously next to you.

Something really upsetting happened at Fabric Mart today. Laura Clarkson was showing me how to complete a refund transaction, and I asked her a respectful (I thought) question about why the company does it that way. She got all snippy with me and said “Never mind, I’ll just do it myself.” There were no customers around, but some of the other employees heard her. She even made eye contact with Liz Mendoza and rolled her eyes. I felt really hurt and shocked by Laura’s tone. It’s not like I was trying to be rude to her or anything. All I want is to understand the process, and it helps me to ask why. Besides, the company says it is open to new ideas, and maybe there was a quicker, easier way to process a refund, I don’t know. If I don’t ask questions, how do I find things out? But she acted like I was either trying to get out of doing it, or criticizing her expertise, or something. I know she doesn’t have an attitude like that when our boss is around. In fact, she acts really cool if Fran is there. I tried to tell Laura that I would be happy to practice doing the refund her way, but she said “Never mind,” again, all huffy. Then she ignored me the rest of the day. I mean, how am I going to learn how to do basic stuff at Fabric Mart if I can’t get her to answer my questions because she is offended for some reason I can’t figure out? To make it worse, after work in the break room she loudly (and I mean in a really loud voice) announced that she was going to Sushi City for happy hour. Then she looked at each individual person

Read this excerpt from a story. Julia was enjoying the view from the porch. She had her feet up, and she was sipping a soda while the kids played kickball in the yard. She had a book in her lap, but she had not opened it yet. Riley was complaining about her brother’s pitching. Cooper was stealing extra bases. No big deal. This was an easy babysitting job. "Come on, pitch it over the plate, will you?" Riley demanded. The next pitch was a disaster. Julie set her soda aside and offered to be all-time pitcher. "How about it, guys? I will pitch the same for everyone." What action does Julia take in this excerpt? Julia reads a book on the porch. Julia tells the kids how to behave. Julia criticizes the pitcher. Julia joins a kickball game action does Julia take in this excerpt. Thus, option D is correct.
What is an excerpt? This is a brief excerpt from a book, movie, or other type of literary work. The passage needs to be brief enough to be read during a discussion. A perfect section delivers the point with the fewest number of words possible since all the proof is read aloud during the discussion.
While the youngsters played kickball, Julia sat on the porch and took in the scenery. Riley criticized Cooper for snatching extra walks as Riley grumbled about her brother's pitching. In this passage, Julia participates in a kickball game. Julie promised to throw the same pitch for each person as the all-time pitcher.
Therefore, option D (joining a kickball game) is correct.

What should appear at the top of every journal entry?
A.
the date
C.
the entry number
D.
your instructor's name
Explanation: The most important entry for a journal is the date, so that you know when the entry was added and what time during your life the entry relates to. While the entry number would help keep the entries organized and in order, it is not entirely necessary if you also have the entry date. Choice D also doesn't make any sense, because who is this instructor and why is that even a choice? So choice A, the entry date is what should appear at the top of every journal entry.
Technically the answer could be both A and C, as both are a good idea to add to each journal, but if you could only choose one answer, it would have to be choice A, the entry date, because it already goes through chronological order. Hope this helps!

I was just telling Mr. Farnsworth yesterday that I’d give anything to have the Prince here. I would establish my social position for life! And I’ve such a reputation for being a wonderful hostess. [The telephone rings.] Dear me! — the phone — Hello — Mrs. Sedgwick — Yes — this is Mrs. Pringle — What? No — Oh! Caught in a snow drift — can’t get another car? But have you really tried? Oh, I’m reduced to tears. Good-bye, dear. [She hangs up the receiver, and takes it down again.] Well, I’m glad she dropped out — Central — give me Lakeview 5971 — Dunham, with two less, you can save two cocktails and at least four glasses of champagne. [Into the telephone.] Has Mr. Morgan come in yet? Well, don’t give him the message I telephoned before about crossing the street to Mrs. Pringle’s for dinner. It’s too late — you understand? Mary decides to look for the secret garden's door. The garden has been locked for a very long time, and she is desperate to find it because, if she could only get inside, she would be able to create her own games to play there by herself without anyone ever knowing where she was or how to find her.
