The journey of Lewis and Clark was the most important journey of the time. It was also one of the most difficult and dangerous trips ever made. The land Lewis and Clark planned to travel through had only been seen by the Native Americans living there.

The United States was a young nation when Lewis and Clark made their trip. It had recently gained a large area of land from France. At the time, all white Americans lived in the eastern part of the country. The new land lay to the west. No one knew exactly what it was like or what could be found there.
