The French created a very stratified society with the rich whites ( grand blancs ) at the top, then the poor whites ( petit blancs ), the mulatres ( mixed race people) and the enslaved Blacks at the bottom. By 1789, the French Revolution broke out and the mulatres demanded equality with the whites. Two mulatre leaders , Oge and Chavannes , tried to launch a revolt on the island but the militia defeated them and they were tortured and broken on the wheel.
By 1791, the volcano was boiling among the enslaved Africans. A dynamic leader arose , a Vodou houngan named Dutty Boukman. He was a commandeur ( slave overseer ) . He was well respected .
