What do you get if you cross two different species? Depending upon the species, you might end up with a grolar bear, a wolfdog, or a Savannah cat, among many others. What do these animals have in common? They're hybrids. Sometimes hybrids happen naturally in the wild, but usually, hybrids are the result of humans selectively breeding animals.

Grolar bears and pizzlies are the result of crossing polar bears and grizzly bears. These hybrids were first seen in zoos, as the bears' natural habitats did not normally overlap. Recently, these hybrids have started appearing in the wild. Due to climate change, the bears' once-separate habitats are beginning to overlap. Bigger and more aggressive than their parents, grolar bears and pizzlies could pose a risk to natural habitats and humans.

Wolfdogs are, as their name suggests, the result of crossing a wolf with a domestic dog. Bred for the pet trade, these hybrids do not often happen in the wild. Wolfdogs do not make good pets, however, as they can be destructive and aggressive. Many states have outlawed keeping wolfdogs because they can pose a danger to people.

Savannah cats are another example of human-made hybrids that were developed to be pets. Savannahs are the result of crossing a small wildcat called a serval with a domestic housecat. They look like miniature versions of the wildcat, which is why many people like keeping them as pets. Like the wolfdog, however, Savannahs do not make ideal house pets. They can be destructive, and usually, they keep the wild nature of the serval.

There are many more examples of human-made hybrid animals. Some hybrids, such as the mule, have been helpful to humans. Unfortunately, others, like the wolfdog or Savannah cat, should not have been made in the first place.

Everyone has heard the adage "Laughter is the best medicine." Researchers are finding that writing about one’s feelings can be effective medicine, too. People have been recording their feelings in diaries for centuries. Recent studies, though, suggest that such writing not only improves a person’s mood; it can also have a significant influence on their physical condition. Therefore, physicians should incorporate patient journaling as part of their treatment for any complaint or disease.

It is true that not all people benefit from diary-writing. Studies are still exploring how individual differences influence the health-related effectiveness of writing. It is also true that not all writing benefits a person's health. For example, it's not enough to simply write, "I feel bad" or "I hurt." To gain any health benefit, the writing must be expressive. In other words, a person must explore their feelings instead of only stating them. They must write sentences that begin along the lines of "I feel sad because..." This is the type of writing, often called journaling, that can improve one's health.

One way journaling improves health is by reducing stress and anxiety. Brain science has determined that each side of the human brain has different strengths. The left brain is rational and analytical. The right brain functions as a creative and emotional center. Journaling about stressful or anxious situations accesses the right brain. Doing so enables a person to clarify feelings and solve problems. Consistent journaling also helps the writer discover patterns of thought and behavior. According to Richard Petty, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University, "However you tag your thoughts—as trash or as worthy of protection—seems to make a difference in how you use those thoughts." Expressive writing can help not only identify but also change the way a person tags their thoughts. A 2011 study conducted in Spain, for example, found that writing helped teens get rid of negative thoughts. In the study, teens wrote down their negative thoughts about their bodies. This cleared the thoughts from their minds. Then they threw away what they wrote. As a result, the teens felt less stress and anxiety about their appearances.

Research suggests that journaling can also improve a person's physical well-being. It has proven to be particularly beneficial to people who have chronic diseases, such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease characterized by swelling in the joints. In one study, psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin asked patients to write expressively for twenty minutes a day for three consecutive days. In a medical check-up four months later, those patients had fewer and less severe symptoms. The control group, which had the same disease but did not write expressively, did not show such improvement.

A person's immune system is responsible for fighting off viruses and other causes of illness. Doctors in New Zealand found that journaling strengthened immune function in patients with immune system disease. In 1873, explorer William Gosse found a large rock on the continent of Australia. He named it Ayers Rock after Sir Henry Ayers, who was then the prime minister of Southern Australia. But, the rock already had a name.
The rock had been a very important and sacred site to the Aborigines, who were the people who first lived on the continent. They had called the rock "Uluru" long before England started prison colonies there in the 1700s. When the government of Australia returned ownership of the rock to the Aborigines, it once again became known around the world as Uluru.
Uluru, which is the world's largest rock, is made of sandstone marked by rainwater gullies, or ditches. There are also caves with ancient carvings on the walls. The rock rises to over 1,100 feet tall, and its borders stretch to 6 miles. Though its climate is hot like the desert, there is considerable plant and animal life in the area around Uluru. During the day, different colors are reflected from it in the sunlight. At night, it glows red like a large burning coal.
Many people travel to Australia each year to witness the wonder of Uluru. Some like to walk around the edge of the rock on the ground. Others climb to the top, though some people think they should not do so. They believe that climbing destroys the beauty of the rock. They also argue that it should be kept as a sacred place for the Aborigines. From the ground or its highest point, Uluru is a true wonder of the world.

The continent of Australia is vast with many amazing sites to enjoy. One of these is Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock. It is a giant rock formation that rises out of the center of the continent. The rock and the area that surrounds it are known to be sacred to the aboriginal peoples of Australia.
Beginning in the late 1930s, Uluru became a favorite spot for tourists who visited Australia. Over time, roads were run up to the base of the rock, making way for cars and tour buses to carry visitors up close. Motels and other buildings were erected nearby. However, after the government gradually realized the negative effects these additions were having on the area, it moved the buildings farther away.
Though the rock and its surroundings had been home to aboriginal groups, the Australian government owned and managed it until the mid-1980s. Then, the area was given back with certain conditions. One condition was that visitors could still climb the rock. This was against the wishes of the aboriginal groups because of the rock's importance in their culture. It was also clear that having tourists on the rock—and in the surrounding areas—was harmful to nearby plant and animal life. The group worked together with the government to try to limit or control climbing on the rock, but agreements were not always kept. However, after a number of undesirable behaviors by tourists in recent years, it has been decided that climbing will be banned in the near future.
