Herman Talmadge, the son of Eugene Talmadge, Melvin E. Thompson, the lieutenant governor-elect, and Ellis Arnall, the outgoing governor, all ran for the position. Georgia State University's accreditation was revoked by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a result of this interference in academic matters. Additionally, it helped Ellis Arnall overcome Talmadge in 1942.
